• At what age may I become a private pilot?

You may earn your Private Pilot License (PPL) at just 17 years of age.

  • May I begin training before I turn 17?

Most certainly. Flight training can be conducted at any age, though you must be 16 years of age to fly solo, and 17 to earn your PPL.

  • Is there an upper end to the age limit?

Not presently; so long as you maintain your medical, you may fly your whole life!

  • What is a medical?

A medical is a physical exam conducted by an Airman Medical Examiner (AME) to asses whether or not you are fit to fly. You can begin training prior to completing your medical, but you need it to solo. The sooner it is acquired, the better.

  • What other exams must I pass for my PPL?

Aside from your medical examination, there are three tests you must complete to achieve your PPL. Firstly, you must pass your FAA written exam. This must occur prior to your first solo flight. The other two tests, an oral and a practical exam, comprise your final exam (checkride) with an FAA examiner (DPE).

  • How do I prepare for my FAA written exam?

We can suggest online ground schools, provide you with written materials to self-study, or you can work with your instructor as you go (studying info that is relevant to the written with each flight lesson.) Your instructor will pay close attention to your progress no matter which route you choose to ensure you are well-equipped to pass.

  • How many hours do I need to earn my PPL?

The FAA requires 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours of instruction and 10 hours of solo practice. Most students average around 60 hours total, but it is possible to keep your hours down if you train frequently.

  • When do I get to solo?

This very important judgement will be rendered by your instructor based on his or her understanding of your ability and hands-on experience with you.

  • How long does earning a PPL take?

Most students complete their PPL within six to twelve months, though every student is unique. We will always work with you to help manage and respect your time and budgetary expectations.

  • How much does this all cost?

Please visit our pricing sheet for current aircraft and instructor rates. At an average of 60 flight hours with 50 primary instruction hours, 20 ground hours, one FAA written exam, one medical exam, one checkride, and misc. supplies, we estimate a PPL to cost around $20,000. This number is different for each individual.

  • Do I need to pay for everything upfront?

Certainly not. You are welcome to keep credit on account with us, or link a credit card to our system to be auto-billed following each flight, ground session, or rental.

  • What if I think I may not like it?

We like to think that everyone will love flying as much as we do, but it just might not be your thing. This is why we offer Discovery Flights. A Discovery Flight allows you to fly around our local airspace with an expert instructor for just under an hour. You’ll be able to control the aircraft as much or as little as you’d like, with the option to land early if you’re uncomfortable in any way.
